Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

  • 500 g (1 lb) ground meat (a 50/50 mix of beef and pork is ideal)

  • 1 large egg

  • 60 g (½ cup) grated Parmesan cheese

  • 30 g (½ cup) plain breadcrumbs (Italian-seasoned works too)

  • 60 ml (¼ cup) milk or cream

  • 1 clove garlic, minced

  • 5 g (2 tbsp) fresh parsley, finely chopped (or 2 tsp dried)

  • ½ tsp dried oregano (optional, for that "Italian-American" flavor)

  • ½ tsp onion powder (optional, but recommended)

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • ½ tsp salt (or to taste)

  • ¼ tsp black pepper

For the Simple Tomato Sauce (Optional but Classic):

  • 1 (24 oz / 700g) jar of your favorite marinara sauce or:

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • ½ onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 (28 oz / 800g) can crushed tomatoes

  • 1 tsp dried basil

  • ½ tsp dried oregano

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1 tsp sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
