DISCOVER FAMILY

Dinner was silently ended before it had even properly begun. Maxwell refused to let Lena serve him anything and instead sat down with her in the living room.

“I didn’t even know Elara had a daughter,” he said. “But now that I know, I want to be a part of your life. You’re family.”

Lena, overwhelmed, put her hand to her mouth.
"I've always wondered why Mom never talked about her childhood."

“She wanted you to grow up safe,” Maxwell said gently. “And she succeeded, at least until adulthood brought its own challenges.”

Darius approached her, remorse written all over his face.
"Lena... I'm sorry. I should have stopped immediately when you told me about your mother. I didn't realize how much you needed me."

Lena nodded wearily.
"I just didn't want to be a burden on anyone."

"You never are," he whispered.
