This poison destroys bones. But everyone drinks it, some every day!

After 40 minutes:

  • Caffeine Absorption: The caffeine (about 34 mg in a can) is fully absorbed. Caffeine is a stimulant that can temporarily increase alertness and may slightly raise blood pressure in some individuals.

  • The claim that the liver "releases more sugar" in response to caffeine is largely incorrect. Caffeine can cause a temporary increase in blood sugar by promoting the release of adrenaline (which can trigger the release of stored glucose), but this is not a primary or significant effect from the amount in one soda.

After 45 minutes:

  • Dopamine Release: This point is partially accurate. Pleasurable activities, including eating sugary foods, can trigger the release of dopamine in the brain's reward centers. This reinforces the behavior, making you want to repeat it. This is a well-documented effect of many hyper-palatable foods and drinks.

After 60 minutes and beyond:

  • Phosphoric Acid and Minerals: This is where the text contains the most significant misinformation.

    • Phosphate does not "bind" minerals in the lower intestine in a way that "strengthens the digestive system." This is a nonsensical claim.

    • The real concern is that a high intake of phosphoric acid, especially when calcium intake is low, can potentially disrupt the calcium-phosphorus balance in the blood. To correct this, the body may pull calcium from bones if dietary calcium is insufficient. This is a long-term risk factor for osteoporosis, not an immediate effect from one drink.

    • The text's claim that "all calcium, magnesium and zinc intended for the bones are excreted" after one soda is a gross exaggeration and not supported by science. This would lead to severe mineral deficiencies very quickly.

  • The Diuretic Effect: Both the caffeine and the sugar load can have a mild diuretic effect, meaning they may cause you to lose more water and sodium through urine. However, the net effect is still positive hydration—you don't excrete more fluid than you consumed from the drink itself.

  • The "Crash": This part is accurate. After the initial spike in blood sugar and caffeine, your blood sugar levels can drop, potentially leading to feelings of fatigue, irritability, and lethargy.
